Discipline - A Key Factor in Business Success
Gabriel Ama
The greatest emotion that drives most folks to remain in paid employment is fear. For those who are bold enough to decide to leave paid employment and become their own bosses, a number of factors would have driven their desire to be on their own.
This article aims to highlight the importance of discipline in sustaining the tempo of factors that informed the decision to become one’s own boss and factors that will guide the person to achievements.
If you are currently or have been in paid employment before, cast your mind to days when your alarm goes off early in the morning to tell you to begin preparations to go to work and you just do not feel like it. In your mind, you feel as though you should cover yourself up and go back to bed till much later.
How about Sunday evenings when you know in your mind that the following day begins the working week? The sad feeling that sometimes plays on your mind sounds familiar, doesn’t it? What about at the office when you are already tired having spent just a few working hours of the day and you believe you should retire for the day but you cannot due to a deadline to write a report, meet with a client, etc?
When you have decided to be your own boss, you can be sure that those same feelings would sometimes crop up and at your own discretion you will decide on what you feel is best for you at the time.
It is however, pertinent to note that as researchers have confirmed, humans by nature do not want to work but almost everyone definitely wants to live a life of pleasures. So how do you cope with such feelings to enable you do the things that would enhance your success in your business? You definitely require discipline of the mind.
Discipline is that factor that would enable you:
(1) Keep track of your business and personal expenses and see where you need to make necessary adjustments. This is particularly important when you realize that business success revolves basically around activities that enhance profitability and costs reduction almost simultaneously.
To delay gratification and reinvest your profits when you are especially starting out in business requires a lot of discipline.
(2) Create and follow a daily or weekly action plan aimed towards achieving your business objectives (customer satisfaction, profitability, cost control, etc).
(3) Keep appointments with your clients at the agreed time.
(4) To never give up even when it appears you are facing rather overwhelming business challenges. There are indeed times when you might want to start looking once again in the direction of paid employment when things seem too hard to handle.
Even family members, relatives, friends and former colleagues would gladly urge you to give up your business and take up paid employment during challenging times.
Discipline makes you focus ONLY in the direction of your business objectives.
(5) Make a religious ritual of daily morning and evening prayer in seeking God’s guidance in your business.
(6) Know, particularly when you work from home, when to work and when to do other important activities like spend time with kids, spouses, etc without overdoing it – in essence, living a balanced life.
(7) Have a regular physical exercise schedule that would help you keep your health in top shape.
(8) Especially if you are still in paid employment, start immediately the process of getting out of the rat race: creating time from your very busy schedule to read inspirational materials, look for business opportunities and begin saving from the ‘little’ you earn toward investments.
If you operated or are currently operating in paid employment under a ‘regimented’ environment where time is of the essence, you can be sure that as your own boss, you do a need a bit of that environment so that you do not lose track of what your business objectives are. Success cannot be achieved where discipline is certainly lacking.
