Become Financially Independent
Jack Cronin
The path to financial independence is within your reach, but this goal is like no other.
New Years Resolutions have passed, but it’s definitely not too late to set goals for the year. Finances are usually at the forefront of people’s minds around this time with W-2s and 1099s arriving in the mail, lots of talk about funding IRAs, and the upcoming tax deadline. Why not use this time to also set a financial stretch goal for yourself. Does something like financial independence sound exciting to you? Let’s explore this concept a little further.
First, I’d like to start with a little exercise. Here goes………picture in your mind someone who you would consider to be well off financially. You know, someone who is definitely financially independent. Focus closely enough that you can see that person’s face. (Take a few seconds and do the exercise now). OK, whose face did you see? Was it a famous celebrity, a highly paid athlete, or maybe a famous business person like Jack Welch or Bill Gates? Or was it yourself? If you didn’t picture yourself as being financially independent, then subconsciously you are limiting your ability to fill that role. You won’t become financially independent unless you truly believe this is a goal that you can achieve.
The first step towards financial independence is defining what financial independence means to you. Some people feel that financial independence means never having to work again and being able to buy everything they could ever possibly want. A much more conservative definition would be something like… not having the cost of an item being a major consideration in the decision to buy or not buy the item. If you think about how much money it would take to meet these two definitions of financial independence, you can easily see that the amount of money you need to feel like you are financially independent is directly related to your definition of what financial independence means to you.
Once you’ve defined what financial independence means, getting there becomes your goal. The are tons of articles available that talk about how to achieve your goals many times, but there are some unique aspects about our feelings towards money and finances that can complicate getting to this goal. Working with a special adviser like a Personal Coach will change the way you think about money and identify what you need to do to attract more of it.
